Cancer is a bitch!
Cancer is a bitch! And the hair/mullet must go!
Up until 2014 I didn’t think too much of the impact that it can have on families, but when it suddenly took over my Pop as we watched him deteriorated and passed within the hospital where I work, it opened me up to the effects cancer could have on our lives. This tragedy motivated me to do more, I started raising funds through running, and now through donating my hair.
We don’t mention the ‘C’ word in 2019. Cancer knocked on our door and my nan became its next victim. Unlike our experience with Pop, it was a very slow and horrible ordeal. We were told that it could be any day, turned out, it carried on for nearly a full year. Our trips to Tasmania where she lived were full of fear, anxiety, and misery.
In 2023, I married my now wife, Emily. We thought it would be the start of the best years of our lives, but shortly before, our friends who were part of our bridal party had just spent overnight in hospital, said goodbye to their farther who had passed away, only weeks after having an operation to prolong his life which eventually was his demise.
A couple of months later, my Uncle Barry passed away after being in terrible condition of pancreatic cancer for many years. The penny dropped for me, urged me to do something when just another month passed and my close family friend, Dean, passed away after battling with the after affects of having a bone marrow biopsy. We celebrated the day he came home from hospital and were over the moon to spend Christmas with him. Little did I know that would be the last time I would see him as he was shortly intubated for the following months until he sadly passed. Little that I can do to beat cancer, but the best thing I felt I could do was to grow my hair out in the worst way possible, being a mullet, in the hopes friends that read this would be happy to see it go and donate for the good cause that is the Cancer Council.
Kick it to the kerb
Every year we lose so many Friends and Family to this dreaded cancer, and this year has been the hardest one for me.
I lost 2 close friends in 2024, Dean and Deb. Their bravery and strong will was a standout, both enjoyed a good fight, over so many topics, but unfortunately this was a fight they didn't win.
Ive been inspired by their can-do attitude and decided to shave my hair and donate my hair.
Our Team Kick to the Kerb consists of Belinda, Cory and Emily, they are either cutting or colouring their hair.
Please donate and help this worthy cause, every dollar can make a difference.
Best wishes darl xx
