IMAGINE LEAVING A YOUNG FAMILY BEHIND
Most people celebrate turning 40, but for me the most important milestone was turning 39. Last August I reached this milestone. With a husband, a young child and a baby at my side we quietly celebrated while in lockdown.
You see, this is a milestone for me as it’s the age that my mother (Julie) never reached.
Thinking about being the same age as she was when she died, and having many of the same life experiences (particularly family), I cannot imagine going through what she must have gone through.
She (only 38 years old), a 37 year old husband (my Dad, Rudy), 5 year old daughter (me) and my brother who was barely 1 year old, being told she had cancer, and only living a few months after being diagnosed. My imagination runs wild thinking about it.
Imagine the feeling of considering your death.
Imagine the guilt of leaving a young family behind to fend for themselves.
Imagine thinking about how they might survive without you financially.
Imagine thinking about all the years and milestones you will miss: Birthdays, first words, school accomplishments, weddings and grandchildren!
Imagine organising everything that your husband might need as he becomes a single parent with limited extended family help.
Imagine wondering what memories to leave for the kids. Should you make a video? Or write a letter? What would you even say that could make up for the fact you aren’t there?
Imagine gradually getting so sick that you can no longer spend your last weeks with enough energy to enjoy your kids.
There is no end to the sadness that is that situation.
And I will never truely know what she went through.
Here’s hoping that families in the future have more support than we did which is why I’m raising money to help them.
Asking you guys to donate to an amazing charity that helps families through these tough times.
And in exchange I’m shaving my head!
Hoping someone else might also enjoy my red hair for a while.
