Hellbent On Hope

By Samantha Lombardi

I’m fundraising for Cancer Council Victoria to help stop cancer.

My name is Samantha and I am the lead singer of ‘The Smith & Western Jury’. An Alt-Country band from Melbourne, Vic. We are currently gearing up to release our debut album, and in doing so have been playing several gigs around Victoria. One song off our upcoming album is called ‘Heartache’. I wrote this song about how heartbroken I was when one of my best friends passed away from tongue Cancer in 2021.

Over ten years ago we were in a band together and she was an amazingly talented guitarist & beautiful person. We became super close through music and I still miss her and think about her everyday. When she passed away it shook me like nothing else ever had. Losing someone so young is really hard to get your head around. And to make matters worse, when she was battling her cancer we were going through strict lock-downs due to Covid, which meant many of her friends and family could not visit her in hospital to say goodbye, including me.

Like many others in a similar situation I have felt helpless for a long time. Every time I sing my song about her, people comment on it as it seems to be the one that people resonate with the most, as unfortunately it seems cancer touches everyone in one way or another. When we release new songs, we often put on a "single launch" at a local pub to promote the song. But this time around, I thought this could be my chance to do some good with the song and try and raise some money for the Cancer Council. For the great work the Cancer Council are doing and hopefully it will help in some small way.
