My Yeye

I did get to meet my dad’s mum Yeye. She is fun and exciting and loves to live life to the fullest. Yeye is amazing at writing and spends some of her free time volunteering at Lifeline. Yeye is very nice to me and my brothers and always spoils us with days out to the city or little treats. Currently, she is battling breast cancer. She has had many treatments and has now finished her treatment. Thanks to cancer research we caught it early and she was able to get better but there is still a chance the cancer could get worse. I wish there was a cure for cancer so my Yeye can be fully recovered.

Yangti Sri

I never got to meet my Yangti Sri. I don't know much about her so I asked mama to tell me some things.
She died of breast cancer when my mum was only 8 years old. Afterwards mama had to leave to live with their grandma and aunties away from her brother and sisters.
Mama says if I had met her, she would have taught me Javanese & Balinese dancing, and how to sew.
She was a strong woman and head of her village (when it was very rare for a woman to be in charge).
I hope I can be that brave like that and cutting all my hair for cancer research seems a good start!

We are amazed! In less than a day we smashed our goal of $3000. We have had donations from all over the world - special thank you to my family in Indonesia and Ireland. Aunty Ali has talked me into being brave, so lets make it to $8000.

I grew up with stories about how cancer effected my family. My mum lost her mum from breast cancer when she was only 8 years old, she also lost her grandmother and 2 of her cousins who died a few years ago.
My dad’s grandma is a breast cancer survivor and I am lucky to have met her. Every night before bed I pray with my parents and siblings for friends and family that are currently fighting cancer. I always pray that the people I know won’t get cancer but it’s not enough. My dad’s cousin got cancer, my grandma’s friend, my school friend’s mum and now my grandma is battling breast cancer. 
I am worried that I will lose her like my other grandma. It is sad knowing that plenty of kids out there are scared of losing their grandmas, mums, siblings or other family members from cancer. Watching my grandma during her treatment, I know we are lucky to live in Australia with great treatments facilities, something that my other grandma didn’t have. But treatment alone is not going to be enough, we need a cure for cancer. I’m not smart enough to find the cure on my own so I want to raise money to help cancer council fund their research to find the answer.

Hi, my name is Larasati and I'm 12.

In a few weeks I'm cutting my hair and donating it to kids with cancer - I've only had 2 haircuts in my whole life!

I also want to raise money for breast cancer. Both my grandmas have been diagnosed - my Yangti (mama's mum) died when she was 39 and I never got to meet her. My Yeye (papa's mum) I get to hug every day because of tests that check for breast cancer before you get sick.
