Racing across mountains for cancer research

By Julian Wearne

I’m fundraising for Cancer Council Victoria to help stop cancer.

In the last year alone, I've had friends, family and colleagues all hit with cancer, some of whom have gone through treatment to be thankfully told their cancer is in remission, others who have not been so lucky and others who are still fighting the good fight. This is why I've decided to fundraise for the Cancer Council when I partake in the 2025 Silk Road Mountain Race.

The Silk Road Mountain Race is a high altitude, 1954km bike race across wild and remote parts of Kyrgyzstan. It's a single stage race (ie the clock doesn't stop to sleep!), riders must be self-reliant meaning carrying their own food, camping setup and bike repair gear. The route is very hilly, with ~27,900m of elevation gain over the course (that's 3x Mount Everest!) reaching heights of up to 4,000m above sea level. Most of the route is unpaved and conditions vary from old disused gravel roads, to pushing your bike though rocky passes. I've done a few rides like this in recent years - including the Tassie Gift last November - so I've got a fair idea of what I'm in for, but I've never had the chance to race like this overseas and I've never been anywhere nearly so high above sea level so I'm not sure how I will cope with the altitude - but I'll be doing my damn best to get to the finish line in about 11 or 12 days. I'm not a professional rider by any means - and I'm certainly not sponsored - but I'm hoping that if you're reading this you can donate some money not towards my adventure - but to a cause near and dear to me.

Anything you can give is appreciated and will go directly towards the Cancer Council for them to continue their important work.

Every year more than 35,000 Victorians hear the words ‘you have cancer’.

Thanks in part to generous Victorians, 7 in 10 of them will survive five years after a cancer diagnosis, but there’s still so much work to be done.

Cancer Council needs our support more than ever this year. Every dollar raised gives hope for a cancer free future. By supporting my fundraiser, you’re funding life-saving cancer treatments, prevention programs, and support services that ensure no one has to face cancer alone.

Good luck Julian! If coca leaves are around, I suggest chewing on them for altitude sickness :)

What a challenge Julian! Hans’s advice : go. ridiculously slow and steady, without stopping and starting. Heartbeat breathing and steps in sync. My advice: look forward to bedtime! Lots of love Nats and Hans.
