I’m fundraising for Cancer Council Victoria to help stop cancer.
On the 16th of February I will be Skydiving to raise money for cancer. This is something significantly out of my comfort zone but no where near as daunting as the thought of hearing that someone in my family or close to me has cancer again.
Whether we like it or not everyone of us is affected by cancer. The word alone makes my skin crawl. At the age of nine I lost a close family member to brain cancer. Little did I know at this stage this was just the start of this terrible disease. In early 2021 when I was 13 years old I found out my mother had cancer that had been put down to 'reflux' to later find out that it was in fact stomach cancer but by the time we found out it had spread like wildfire and 2 days later she passed away with me by her side holding her hand. This is a moment I will never forget. That same year my mums dad was diagnosed with bowel cancer which was luckily caught early enough to be cut out. Then in late 2023 just before I started my final year of High school my father was diagnosed with brain cancer. Fortunately it was an Oligodendroglioma which is treatable and my dad has just finished treatment in January of this year.
Every year more than 35,000 Victorians hear the words ‘you have cancer’.
Thanks in part to generous Victorians, 7 in 10 of them will survive five years after a cancer diagnosis, but there’s still so much work to be done.
Cancer Council needs our support more than ever this year. Every dollar raised gives hope for a cancer free future. By supporting my fundraiser, you’re funding life-saving cancer treatments, prevention programs, and support services that ensure no one has to face cancer alone.
