We've got this Cancer Council! Let's gooo!
At current rates, it's expected 1 in 2 Australians will be diagnosed with cancer by the age of 85.
Now that I've provided you with one fact, I'm going to be a little more sincere with my thoughts on cancer which goes beyond the stats and facts I know you've heard before.
To those who are reading this, you're most likely directly or indirectly impacted by cancer. To put simply, it sucks. From over night stays in hospital, to shaving your head, to driving long hours to wait in the dull waiting rooms for a couple of unsettling hours for an appointment. Yes, cancer sucks. Sometimes they have a snack cart which rolls around and you can grab yourself a Mars bar. But yes, cancer sucks.
Though cancer is uncertain, there is only one thing I am certain about more than anything which is you need support. You need to know someone has got your back. You need to know when it gets rough -- and it does get rough -- someone out there is waving a giant foam thumbs up screaming "you've got this!".
Cancer is a difficult conversation to have with yourself, your loved ones and your employer. At times, giving support or asking for support can be like trying to solve a Rubik's Cube. It's hard, stressful, and you might even try to Google the answer.
This year, I am taking part in the Great Ocean Road Running Festival running a 44km marathon to raise money for Cancer Council and working as part of a team bringing awareness to #workingwithcancer.
Your money will go towards research, prevention programs, and personally the most important: support. Because though we don't have a cure now, we do have each other. And no one -- no one -- should go through cancer alone.
