Ali-oops Shave for Cancer Research

By Alison Leicester

Was asked why, as person was interested, this is my response to them via email

I have had a few friend's parent either passing to cancer or being diagnosed recently. It is just happening too often, and we need to research on helping to reduce the numbers. Their are also young people getting cancer, and they should be having a full life ahead of them, without cancer.
My mother is a cancer survivor. She was diagnosed with melanoma in 1961 and was given 10 years to live. My parents had only moved to Australia from UK two years prior. Before leaving the UK, Mum did notice something on her head, near hairline. She was a red head with fair skin (Welsh), so it stood out. The doctor told her it was nothing to worry about. When she was in Australia, they were currently living in Adelaide at the time, a friend noticed this mark on her head, and Mum did notice it was getting darker. She went to the doctor and was diagnosed with melanoma, the worst of the worst.
Mum had it removed, and had to have a skin graft on the area. Right at the top of her head. We knew she had something done there but was never told what it was until 25 years later (yes, she lived past 10 years). We never talked about that type of stuff. Mum had another melanoma, this time at the back of her head, and had  part of muscle removed in her neck. We said to her, why are you so relaxed, no "why me" and she said 25 years ago I was given 10 years to live, I had already gone through that (keep in mind Mum had 3 more children after the diagnosis in 1961).
The cancer had not spread, she didn't need radiotherapy or chemo.
Then 2-3 years later, she had a third melanoma. Again, no spread of cancer.
My mum was 29 years old when she was told she had 10 years to live, she turned 91 last December, and still going strong. She has skin checks regularly, and still gets skin cancer, but the minor ones.
So my reason is for everyone out there that are getting cancer that we should, in our time, have a cure. So I wanted to raise money for research to help others less fortunately than my mother, who are fighting.
So I decided to raise money to shave my hair and I will also be donating my hair to charity.

Not long now … 28/3

Only a few days until the official snip.

Final date confirmed

Sian will be doing the honors on Thursday 28 March. Photos, before and after, maybe a video will be done :)

Date to be confirmed

I have lined up a friend who will do the honours. Most likely a no.2. Looking at around or just after Easter.
My hair is the longest it has been since high school, so what better way than to donate for others in need.
So not only raising money for cancer research but also helping those that have hair loss other than cancer.

I’m fundraising for Cancer Council Victoria to help stop cancer.

Every year more than 35,000 Victorians hear the words ‘you have cancer’.

Thanks in part to generous Victorians, 7 in 10 of them will survive five years after a cancer diagnosis, but there’s still so much work to be done.

Cancer Council needs our support more than ever this year. Every dollar raised gives hope for a cancer free future. By supporting my event, you’re funding life-saving cancer treatments, prevention programs, and support services that ensure no one has to face cancer alone.
