For my birthday this year I’m fundraising for Cancer Council Victoria to help stop cancer.
In just under a month I'll be turning 23, and while birthdays are a cause for celebration and giving, I'd like this birthday to be about giving back and celebrating the strength and persistence of those who have been effected by cancer in any form.
The word cancer is something my family has come to hear far too often. Having multiple family members go through various cancer treatments. Unfortunately I'm no stranger to the hardships and symptoms cancer patients are faced with, having seen it first hand when my mother started her battle with breast cancer in 2016.
Whilst watching my mum persevere through her treatment and although she rarely complained, one symptom of her treatment still sticks to my brain to this day; the hair loss. Hair loss during cancer treatment in a way is the token symptom of cancer. Hair loss is what most people would associate with cancer, and whilst for some patients hair loss is avoidable, others do not have that choice.
Those who know me well, know that I have had an interesting relationship with my own hair. Having struggled with my own body image for as long as I can remember, my long hair is something I have held onto as being the single trait I actually like about myself. Fortunately for me I've been able to hold onto this hair and keep it for years, instead of actually solving the root of the self hatred I had for my body. Unfortunately for those who have battled cancer, like my own mother, they do not have this luxury.
In the last year or so I have very much improved the relationship between my mind and my physical appearance, and with that I thought I would try and make a difference. So, for the month leading up to my birthday I ask that instead of worrying about what gift to buy or whether to buy me a gift at all, that you donate to this cause. On top of the money raised, I will be shaving my head on my birthday and collecting my hair for donation, in the hopes that I can give the luxury that I've held onto for so long, to someone who needs it most.

Thanks in part to generous Victorians, 7 in 10 of them will survive five years after a cancer diagnosis, but there’s still so much work to be done.
