Lifes Curveball

After Prad and I got married in January, we imagined our life would be that of your standard newlyweds, but life threw us a curveball, and the past few months have looked a little different, to say the least.

Throughout our wedding, I was experiencing a lot of chest infections, flus, night sweats, and body aches, which I attributed to stress of a very busy life at the time and having a weak immune system. Post-wedding, I noticed a small bump above my left collarbone, which I thought was just a swollen lymph node. After a couple of months of tests, in mid-April, we found out that I was suspected of having lymphoma and the same weekend I broke out into rashes all over my body and was admitted to the hospital for a week. During this time, I didn’t know much about the disease or how to handle the news because nothing was yet confirmed. But after two hospital admissions, two biopsies, three different kinds of scans, and about sixteen different types of needles later, I had a confirmed diagnosis of stage 2 Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a type of blood cancer.

Everything started to happen quite fast post-diagnosis, and it kickstarted a lot more hospital visits. To even get to the point of undergoing chemotherapy, we had to first begin the process of freezing my eggs. I never anticipated that I’d ever need to go through IVF. I’ve always wanted kids and assumed I’d have the opportunity to conceive naturally, so I knew little about the process. However, I had a great IVF doctor and family and friends who helped me understand my options, and I learned so much along the way. My main takeaway from that journey for anyone wanting to start a family of their own is to take the AMH blood test. It can really help you plan for a family if you’re my age and not yet ready for whatever reason. Get yourself checked regularly when you’re sick; don’t ever assume you know what’s wrong with you, and prioritise your self-care. I’m grateful to the nurses and doctors who guided me through my IVF treatment despite how hard it was and to the friends and family who were with us every step of the way, getting us to and from the hospital while Prad had a ruptured Achilles, and giving us so much hope and encouragement through such an emotional journey. Now, we’re two back-to-back IVF treatments in, after an additional seventy-eight more needles and one successful egg harvest and freeze.

Chemotherapy has started, and we’re a month in now. I’ll have a lot more frequent hospital visits, with chemo treatments every two weeks. So life will continue to look different for a little while longer, and so will I. But that’s okay!

I have been surrounded by an overwhelming amount of support and love from my family, friends, and work colleagues. They have stood by me, showered me with so much love, encouragement, and much-needed smiles along the way. Prad, my husband-turned-in-house-nurse, whom I’m blessed with daily, and my Parents, Brother, and In-laws have put their own lives on pause to help support me during this time. They have given me the courage to take the necessary steps to come to terms with and accept my diagnosis. So as scary as the idea of shaving my head is (partly due to the effects of chemo), I want to raise awareness that cancer is out there, and it really can affect any one of us.

I remind myself on the daily that while I have cancer and it sucks (it sucks so bad!), Hodgkins Lymphoma has high rates of complete remission. I’m lucky that there is so much support out there for cancer patients like myself, thanks to organizations like the Cancer Council and many others. I could have easily lost myself in all this (more than I already did), but I’m so lucky to have people who get me through it day by day, who try not to treat me any differently, and continue to let me live my life as normally as possible with a sprinkle of that dark humour that makes them all uncomfortable but brings a smile to my face.

I can not put into words how grateful I am, I appreciate all the help, love, and encouragement I have received so far and know I’m going to receive as I continue on this journey while I do my best to smile and throw up peace signs until I get through this!

I share my story with you all as a reminder that not every day is promised, to find blessings in the small things, and to love and appreciate those you hold dear because you never know when life will throw you a curveball.

Thanks in part to generous Victorians, 7 in 10 of us will survive five years after a cancer diagnosis, but there’s still so much work to be done.

Cancer Council needs our support, every dollar raised gives hope for a cancer free future. By supporting my event, you’re funding life-saving cancer treatments, prevention programs, and support services that ensure no one has to face cancer alone.

This year i’m shaving my hair in part due to my chemo treatments affecting me but also to raise necessary funds for a cancer free future.
