I’m fundraising for Cancer Council Victoria to help stop cancer.
We all know or will know someone with a cancer diagnosis. It might even happen to us. In 2020, two things happened (along with lot of others, gee what a year): I didn't get a haircut all year, and someone I know started their fight with breast cancer.
So as we wind down to celebrate the festive season with our loved ones, and as I somehow managed to get a last minute spot with my hairdresser today (16 December) - I've decided that this is the year to do The Big Chop in honour of those that have no choice but to lose their hair to fight for their lives.
Now when I say chop - I'm talking pretty short! Those that know me know that my long hair is a big part of my identity. Strangers notice it, people on dance floors get whipped with it. Halloween is easy (girl from The Ring, Cousin Itt), and so is maintenance (I literally air dry and do no styling, it just hangs). The above image was my first Facebook profile pic. I've had long hair for 16 years and my last short cut was The Rachel. I'm scared, but in a way that I can laugh off knowing that it will grow back if the bob life ain't for me.
For those who don't have this ability, Sustainable Salons facilitates hair donations that go towards wigs for those suffering from medically-induced hair-loss conditions such as alopecia and cancer, and I will be donating the longest ponytail I can manage. This organisation is recommended by the Cancer Council. https://sustainablesalons.org/ponytaildonations/
If you would like to make a donation in support of my Big Chop, funds raised via this page will go to Cancer Council Victoria to support life-saving cancer treatments, prevention programs, and services that ensure no one has to face cancer alone.
