Its Done!
Wow, in just two short weeks we've managed to raise just shy of $3000. Thats 3 times the amount I was hoping to get initially!WHOA!
Wow, I'm blown away that within just the first day of sharing my page I'm more than 3/4 of the way to my initial goal of $1000! Thank you to everyone who has donated so far.
Because of everyones love and support, I have decided to up the ante, and have increased my fundraising target.
Heres to a better future, thats Cancer free :D
Thank you for your support. I thought I would share a little bit about why this is such an important cause to me.
Gratefully, I personally haven’t been diagnosed, but sadly too many of my loved ones have heard those harrowing words “you have cancer”. Some are survivors, some are still fighting, and others unfortunately lost their battles, so this is for them, so they know they aren’t alone, and that we are working towards a cancer free future.
Poppa Jock – My Poppa Jock was a quiet man, around me anyway. We would sit and listen to the radio, or more he would listen and watch as I would dance around their living room. He taught me to play dominos, and had the softest touch when brushing my hair. Poppa fought against Prostate Cancer which contributed to his passing when I was only nine or ten. Man do I wish I’d known him as an adult.
Aunty Sheree – Aunty Sheree was the fun Aunty (Sorry Aunty Janet). Although I was only young when she passed, I remember her always being so full of life. Even when she was sick, she would always make sure everyone else was having a good time. Sheree passed in 1995 from Breast Cancer and Melanoma which spread to her lungs.
Uncle Ray – Uncle Ray wasn’t my biological Uncle, but one very worthy of the title as he was one of Mum and Dad’s closest friends. Like Sheree, I remember him as the fun Uncle, always teaching me to get up to no good, or dancing around with me. I know he is looking down on us wanting us all to have a good time. Ray’s body was riddled with Cancer by the time it was found. He managed to fight for 4 years before it got them better of him - he passed in 2008.
Aunty Janet – Aunty Janet is like a second mum. Despite being ‘across the ditch’, she has always been there for me, any time day or night. She would give me a stern talking to if I needed it, and a tight squeeze as soon as we were re-united. Aunty has previously fought Breast Cancer, but recently found another lump, along with cancer in her Lymph nodes. She has just finished her treatment, and will be the one to ‘do the Honor’s’ of shaving my hair.
Mama – My Mama Bear is a true inspiration. As those close to me would know she has been thrown some medical challenges, and having Cervical cancer before I was born is one of them. Mum has always been a fighter though and thankfully she kicked Cancers ass, as she went on to have me ? (despite being told after her treatment she likely wouldn’t be able to have any more kids).
Unfortunately, my partners family has also been greatly affected by Cancer also and my shave is also in memory of them.
Carol – or Aunty Carol to my partner, was born to be on a stage. From all accounts she was bright and bubbly, with a passion for creativity in all its forms. Carol was the life of the party, with a laugh that would light up the room. Sadly I didn’t get the honor of meeting Aunty Carol, as Breast Cancer claimed her life in 2016.
Gavin – Cousin Gav was cheeky and mischievous. He was the biggest kid of them all, and could always be found having a sneaky nap during a party. As a cousin I gained through my partner, unfortunately I didn’t know him long, but I do know how much he was loved, and the world is a little boring without him around. Gavin was taken from us in 2020 by an aggressive Brain cancer
Christine – A loving Aunty to my partner, Christine was always smiling. She was a dog lover, and a huge St Kilda fan. Christine succumb to Esophageal cancer in 2014.
Chris – Uncle Chris loved his Cricket and Footy – Go the Tiges! He was playful and always up for a laugh. Chris was taken from his family in 2022 from Lung Cancer.
Dave – Dave was a top block and an incredible musician. He treasured his family and was a big sport fan - He loved the Melbourne Football Club. Dave had Pancreatic Cancer and sadly passed in 2023.
These people above are my reasons why this means so much to me but I’m sure most have been affected by Cancer in one way or another though, so let that be your reason for donating today.
I’m fundraising for Cancer Council Victoria to help stop cancer.
On July the 4th, in dedication to loved ones lost, those still fighting, and those who have succeeded, I will be shaving my hair to help raise money to fight cancer. My hair will also be donated to Sustainable Salons who support charitable organisations and wig-makers, where they can contribute to wigs for those suffering from alopecia areata, cancer or other medically-induced hair-loss conditions.
Every year more than 35,000 Victorians hear the words ‘you have cancer’, not to mention others all around the world.
Thanks in part to generous Victorians, 7 in 10 of them will survive five years after a cancer diagnosis, but there’s still so much work to be done to eradicate this vicious disease.
Cancer Council needs our support more than ever this year. Every dollar raised gives hope for a cancer free future. By supporting my event, you’re funding life-saving cancer treatments, prevention programs, and support services that ensure no one has to face cancer alone.
Please give what you can, be it $1, $10, or $100 dollars, Every little bit helps.
Thanks!
