I’m fundraising for Cancer Council Victoria to help stop cancer.
In under a month, I will be shaving my head and donating my hair to raise money for cancer research and support through the Cancer Council.
Those close to me will know that I have wanted to do this for quite some time. I have always been drawn to the cause and admired those who partake in it, and promised myself I would do it someday. I am so excited to say that soon I will be fulfilling this promise in honour of all those affected by cancer in any way, including some of my own family, friends and loved ones.
My grandfather was diagnosed with leukaemia when I was only 6 years old. I was too young to understand what cancer was and what it might mean for him. I always knew he was sick, but it was not until I grew older that I learned how desperately close I was to losing my hero. Learning of his reality, along with the illness itself and what it has done to others sparked something in me to one day do something big to show how much I cared.
I am very grateful for the hair I have, which is thick, healthy, and still completely natural. Every hairdresser that has touched it has told me never to dye it or cut it off. This gratitude is precisely the reason why shaving it off is the choice I now make to support this cause. Cancer victims are often faced with the harsh reality of unavoidable hair loss. These people, no matter how great their hair is, do not get the luxury of the choice to keep it. I believe that if I am fortunate enough to make this choice on my own terms, then I should use that choice to make a difference for those who don’t have one. And I hope that by donating my hair, a brave soul can enjoy the hair I’m so happy to be able to share.?
I am lucky to still have my grandfather, and proud that he is able to see me support such a cause. I recognise that I am also extremely lucky to have so many healthy family and friends. I know there are countless people out there watching loved ones suffer through and lose their battles. I want those around me who are affected in any way to know I am sorry that this illness exists in your world, and that I am also doing this for you.
